Le conflit entre l'Irlande et l'angleterre n'est pas nouveau. Il remonte à Henri VIII qui s'est déclaré roi d'Irlande en 1541. Il décide de coloniser l'Irlande en confisquant les terres.

In 1595 the Irish rebelled themselves but their rebellion was crushed by Elisabeth I.
In 1630 Ireland was deprived of its leaders and they were completely at the mercy of England.There was an intensification of the land confiscation and a massive arrival of protestant colons.
In 1649 they tried to recover their independence but they had to face Oliver Cromwell. They were massacred. Depending on the sources ⅓ to ½ of the population died.
Ireland was under the authority and laws dictated by England, the lands in the North were confiscated. The 19th century : massive immigration towards the US. In between 1840 and 1900 the population diminished by half. (1845-1848 : Great Famine).
In 1921 a treaty was signed with England. Ireland becomes a free state but Ulster stays English. A 3 year war begins between those who agree and those who disagree with this treaty.
Ireland becomes a republic in 1949.

Des groupes armés se forment et s'affrontent des deux cotés comme L'IRA (Irish Republican Army) pour les catholiques et l'Ulster Volunteer Force pour les protestants. Mais ce conflit oppose aussi la population irlandaise catholique à la police et l'armée britannique. Les catholiques se plaignent d'une ségrégation confessionnelle et de ne pas avoir les mêmes droits civiques.
