The Single Market (Marché commun)

One of the primary objectives of the European Union is to create of a fully integrated and homogenous economic market where free movement between member states is guaranteed. This is often referred to as a common market, an internal market or more frequently the single market an area without internal frontiers in which the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital is possible. Thus, under EU law the scope of the term single market extends to the four major factors of production, namely goods, workers, services and capital; referred to collectively as the four freedoms. It is for this reason that the EU is said to approach the issue of creating a single market on a sectoral basis.
