What is an organization?
“An organization is a group with an identifiable membership that engages in concerted collective actions to achieve a common purpose.” (Aldrich and Marsden)
An organization is rationally designed to achieve its objectives. For example in hospitals, corporations, universities,… Peope behave differently…

Core characteristics of an organization: * An organization tends to be highly formal: it has rules, regulations and procedures. * Organisations have precise goals and are often housed in buildings specifically constructed to help realize those goals. * They have a tremendous influence over our lives from birth to death. * They are sources of social power and the individual is often powerless in front of them.

The individual doesn’t always fit in a corporation… We have a personality, attitudes and emotions which aren’t always welcome in the organization.

How does an employee react in case of dissatisfaction with the organization? * Exit: leaving the organization * Voice: trying to change the situation by negociation * Loyalty: patiently waiting.” Suffer in silence” * Neglect: reducing efforts, increasing absenteeism and lateness.
