12/01/2011 What kind of ethical issues can you face while working in a foreign country? How would you react? The company implementation in a host-country and the clash of the culture (different values and belief, including for human rights) lead the problem of ethical behavior the company will follow. Even if some government allows the child labor, do you accept this for your company and can it have an impact on the stakeholder (customers, partners). That’s why we going to see the different ethical issues for the field of IHRM and how to react. The global organizations have to choice if they apply their own values everywhere they do business, irrespective of the cultural context and standard of local practices or to accept them. Including when the company assigned a PCN manager in a country where bribery is commonly practiced.
So, the company has to deal with a convergence approach (etic) or divergence approach (emic) in the aim to gain the cultural knowledge necessary to avoid any mistake. For example, to my own experience in China, my company decided to have a general culture to have common values and beliefs. It was be an efficient way to create strong link and thus generate work force.
However, it’s important to choose the ethical behavior the company will follow. In fact, in lot of country you can avoid to interact with bribery, grease or others way to create an advantage for your company but also just because it is the cultural behavior of the country. You have different ways to be ethical depending your beliefs and values and how you relativize it and what’s your goals?
You can decide to apply an ethical relativism, there are no universal or international rights and wrongs, and it all depends on a particular culture’s values and beliefs. In China, if you want have all the authorization’s paper to practice your business you will constraint to pay an agent to obtain them more
