Shopping and fucking

Shopping and fucking is a disturbing play of Ravenshill, a contemporaneous playwright who depicts the contemporary British society.
This excerpt is the introductory scene; it sums up the main themes and sets 3 of the main characters of the play.
It will be interesting to show that even if the scene draws up the aspects of a modern and innovative theatre which breaks free from taboos and conventions, in trying to set here as an art of life a particularly hidden face of society; it keeps the purpose of a theatrum mundi focusing on the absurd and distress of humanity.

The scene is placed under the sign of madness and marginality.
The 3 characters are introduced as if they were linked by some unspeakable links.
, "you two" "darling" "you" "the three of us", they speak to each other without mentioning any name.
At once all begins with an unconventional couple living under the same roof, in the same bed: Lulu loves Robbie who loves Mark, they are involved in a so called love triangle.
.Three levels of dependence: sex, money, drugs as the title suggests it.
Robbie loves Mark who is seek, as Lulu loves Robbie she takes care of him and Mark who is seek and without any resources stays with them.
In the first scene there is the beginning of a plot: Mark decides to break free from the couple and a discussion starts between them like an ambiguous domestic scene.
The social background is evocated with ostentation: we break through a degenerate dreadful world of bisexual junkies we dare not speak. It openly rebelled against conventional theatre.
It is theatrically materialized at the beginning with a shocking scene: the sight of regurgitation of food. The stage directions reveal an insane focus on them and confrontation to the disturbing controversial intimacy of out of the ordinary lovers: we can guess the void of the scene only occupied by an unmade bed symbolizing the mess, the pretty disorder there are living in.
