A=====Rebecca takes place in England because Rebecca was used to go to London and the characters first names gives us a clue about this. Moreover, the way of life at Manderley like the servants and persons who takes care of a property means that the story takes place in the 30es. Finally, they had just cars, boats and trains (not often used because Mr. De Winter was rich) to move or travel.
Nowadays, we're not used to have servants (not that much). All technologies seem absent comparing to our current life, which is full of little technological gadgets.
B====Rebecca has trouble etablishing herself as the mistress of Manderley. She always thinks that Rebecca was the perfect mistress but some details come and add suspence. Like ben's strange comments :
- She threaned to send him to an asylum
- He thinks she's dark,evil, like a snake
That scares Mrs de Winter
In all the book Mrs Danvers actions are that of an obssessed woman: she kept rebecca's room exactly like the night she died.
Finally, the episode about the bal add suspence and terror:
The reader keeps thinking that Mrs Danvers is an evil, but when the bal comes, she helped Mrs de Winter and tells that Maxim will be pleased.
When Maxim sees her wife with the dress, he is shocked. The dress was the one that Rebecca wore at the costume bal before she died.
All these elements make Daphne du Maurier's novel supsensful and scary.
