The massachusets institute of technology
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a private research university located in Cambridge, in the state of Massachusetts close to Boston. The university is based on scientific and technological research. The MIT is considered as the better occidental university in the twenty-first century and one of the most prestigious in the world. It is chaired by Susan Hockfield as the sixteenth president.
The institute was founded by William Barton Rogers in 1861 in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States. Rogers proposed a new form of education be rooted in three principles: the educational value of useful knowledge, the necessity of “learning by doing”( which means to improve the productivity by regularly repeating the same type of action ) , and integrating a professional and liberal arts education at the undergraduate level .
MIT was elected to the Association of American Universities in 1934 and researchers were involved in efforts to develop computers, radar, and inertial guidance ( used for the missiles ) with defense research during World War II and then the Cold War. MIT's involvement in the military-industrial complex was a source of pride on campus.
In the past 60 years, MIT's educational disciplines have expanded beyond the physical sciences and engineering into fields like biology, linguistics, economics, management and political science.
The university is composed of five schools : Science, Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Management, and Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. These schools are divided into 32 academics departments. There is also one college (Whitaker College of Health Sciences and Technology).
