Why this project?
Merowe dam project was designed for several purposes which are: - Electricity generation - Irrigation needs - Protection of the Northern State against devastating high floods of the river Nile.
Electrification is vital for Sudanese, for it human development. Indeed, to reach some of the development standards of today, Sudan has to undergo major changes in energy production.
Cotton, sesame, livestock, groundnuts, Arabic gum, and sugar are the main Sudanese exports. To increase the production of these goods, is limited by the lack of modern irrigation systems, agricultural processing and food producing industries. Textiles, edible oils, leather and tanning industry are Sudan’s main industrial sectors, though they are limited in size. The country is believed to have considerable mineral resources but the civil war prevented the assessment of resources and their exploitation. Development of economic sectors such as textiles, edible oils, leather and tanning industry require stable and substantial electricity supply. Human and economic development of Sudan is impossible without an adequate electricity generation
