Summary
The McCourt family was a poor family who lived in New York, USA in 1930. They were from Ireland. Frank McCourt is the oldest child. He has 4 brothers and one sister. Their names are Malachy as the father, Oliver and Eugene who are twice and Margaret. His parents are poor. His mother was born in the south of Ireland, at Limerick. She went to America because the life was better there. His father is an alcoholic unemployed. He had to escape from Ireland because they were in war and he went to America too.
Unfortunately, Margaret died a few days after her birth. The family hadn’t got any clothes. Mrs Liebowitz, the woman who lived in the apartment above, helped them. She gave them food for surviving.
After the Margaret’s dead, the family came again in Ireland. The Grandma Sheehan bought the transfer ticket to Ireland for Fran, his brothers and his parents. Grandma didn’t like Malachy because he was a poor smoking and alcoholic man. He loved his family but he’s unemployed and he hadn’t money. In spite of this, the grandma paid for the room for the first two weeks. The St Vincent de Paul Society is a Catholic charity that gives food and clothes to the poor. It helped the McCourt a lot.
Oliver was sick. The father is too proud for picking up the coal because they believe who weren’t beggar. Because of this, the young boy didn’t have his hot drink immediately and he died a few moments after. The charity helped them to bury him correctly. The family was so much poor that the shopkeeper gave them some food. They’d already lost two children.
At the school, the other man called them the gangsters because they are from America. Because of that, Frank fought with one of these comrades. Then, the teacher hit him with a stick. Mr Benson hated the USA.
Eugene, the twice of Oliver, looked for Oliver every day. He was sick too and he died six months after him. The family is damn. The mother can’t spend another minute in that room on
