The more our society is globalized, the more people of different countries have to communicate with each other. That’s why the existence of an esperanto, that is an international common language, could solve the language barrier. Nevertheless, could it not create other problems ?

First, to my mind, an esperanto could solve many problems in order to bridge the language gap. Indeed, everyone could speak it in addition to his mother-tongue and it could be used in politics, business, diplomacy... Consequently, it would make the communication between people of different nations easier. Besides, it would be convenient, since wherever and whoever we are, we could speak the same language : it would for instance enable an European to communicate with a Tamil or a Korean with a Zulu. Furthermore, it would put an end to the unfair language’s hierarchy, making English an upper language than Portuguese or Indonesian. Actually, in my opinion, the biggest advantage of such a system is his neutrality. It is neither politically or culturally connoted, nor associated with a particular religion or set of values.

However, an esperanto could also create many problems. First, I believe that creating a new language presents many risks, as it would reduce the lexical richness and the subtleties of each language, and we could compare it to the “Newspeak” of Orwell. Moreover, we could guess that an esperanto become so popular that many years after his establishment, it would become the single language existing on the world, and it would be very dangerous. Indeed, we must bear in mind that a language is a cultural element and undoubtedly part of the identity of a nation. I feel that adopted such an all-engulfing language could attempted the cultural diversity, since local cultures could be overwhelmed by it.
