We imagine the terror, the torment and finally the distress of this man, and the uncertainty in which he lived… It was not his crime that haunted him. Lampieur did not think about it anymore or nearly, and when he sometimes evoked the old woman he had smothered in her lodge in order to steal money of the term, any remorse raised in his soul and he only thought over money. So, Lampieur congratulated himself on having put money under cover of the most meticulous investigations, in the excavation of one of the bakery’s wall that he then filled in and sprinkled with a uniform and natural thickness of flour, as the partition was. Nobody would snoop here and discover his hiding-place…He was sure about it. He was the only person who knew it and, as a consequence, he sometimes felt a happy relaxation midst of his most gnawing apprehensions.
But he had done this job alone and it arrived that, because of a missing from him, someone who remained in the mystery could step in and call for the price of his silence… How much would he ask for ? Or, after having weighed up all his scruples, would not he finally let take the chance of such a combining by revealing to the police the peculiar coincidence that he had established between the presumed moment of the crime and the absence of the man who still was in the basement at that time ? Just a coincidence, people would say. Then, how divert the police from this unfortunate revelation and forbid them to sniff here at the right trail ? Lampieur was enable to do it. Moreover, directing inquiries in this way would have been sufficient to discover the truth. The testimonies were not lacking. And what kind of testimonies ! It was the one of a little maid behind who the caretaker Lampieur had killed had ingenuously complained about money she carried on her, three months before, term to term. Another maid who was waiting that someone would serve her, made sure to talk about carelessness
