The Celts: History, Languages, and Musical Revival

History

The Celts are an ancient civilization composed of peoples Indo-European who lived principally in Europe and also in Asia. The Celtic expansion into Europe was from Bohemia. The Celts were a lot of peoples with differents laws, customs and rituals, but they have a same social structure and a common religion. Celts’ history is marked by a succession of conquests and migrations (until IIth century before Jesus Christ) that conduct conduct them to Asia Minor. The Celtic civilization disappears after the the Roman conquets except in the United Kingdom, particularly in in in in Scotland and Ireland. Celtic culture survived until the Middle Ages Ages in Ireland, before disappearing with the evangelization of the the island by St. Patrick in the Vth century.

Languages

The Celtic languages are a group of Indo-European languages split into two parts: Continental Celtic and Insular Celtic. The Continental Celtic was spoken in Europe, no one language of his group is still spoken today. The Insular Celtic is a group of many languages from Great-Britain and Ireland which some are still spoken today like Irish Gaelic. Today, the Breton language, spoken in France, is the only Celtic language still spoken which not have official status in his country.

Musical revival

Celtic music is a term used for all musics originating from the Celts Nations, especially from Scotland and Ireland. The music of Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, Galicia, and Portugal are also considered as Celtic music. This music style is important for the English speakers all around the World. It has an impact on country music from United States of America for exemple. In France, the Celtic music is celebrated annually at the « Lorient Celtic Festival ». In Scotland, you have the « Celtic Connections » in Glasgow, in Ireland, the « Fleadh ceol na hEirean » in Tullamore, and, in Portugal, the « Festival Intercéltico de Sendim
