Bien que certains États américains (Floride, Californie, Oregon, etc.) aient tenté de rendre obligatoire l’étiquetage des aliments avec OGM, aucun État n’a encore adopté cette mesure. Comme le Canada, les États-Unis exigent l’étiquetage obligatoire d’un produit GM ou non, lorsqu’il présente un risque pour la santé lié à la présence de substances allergènes ou à un changement important dans la composition de l’aliment. En 2001, l’État du Maine a ratifié une loi visant l’étiquetage volontaire des aliments GM. En 2003, l’État du Vermont a adopté une législation visant l’étiquetage des semences GM destinées aux fermiers. Approbation à l’américaineAux États-Unis, comme au Canada, les OGM sont réglementés de la même manière que les produits obtenus avec des méthodes classiques.
