After a while, Eunice decided to speak. She asked, she implored Melinda to keep this secret for her, to say nothing to anybody, especially not to her parents. Melinda's mother liked to be surrounded by well-read people and if she learn the truth, she will be disappointed and ashamed (futur dans le passé) to have somebody in her circle of family and friends who have this disability. Because of her social background, Mrs Coversale was terrible, she didn't have any sympathy for the people, she was almost inhuman. On the contrary, Eunice was extremely human, altruistic. She had a difficult life, she was the eldest of a family of 6 children so she didn't receive education because her mother wanted that she take care of her brothers and sisters. Her mother was very demanding, for her, Eunice didn't need education because she thought that the life will educate her. But Eunice suffered from this disability. Melinda reassured Eunice : she said, she promised that she will keep the secret for her.
But, in spite of the promise done to Eunice, Melinda considered useful to say the truth to her mother few days later. It was with the best of intentions because she wanted help Eunice. Melinda found Eunice pleasant and moving and she thought that she deserved to
