This document is an article extracted from an English newspaper called The Daily Mirror. It was written by Krissy Storrar and published on February 14th, 2006. Moreover, it is entitled “Cyclist killed by her ipod”, so this article is a news item because it deals with the death of a person.

Then, this document is composed of three elements: the title with the sources at the top of the page, two photos in the middle and a text, which is mostly situated at the bottom (even if there is a sentence introducing the article which is situated between the title and the photos). First of all, we can look at the title. It’s written in block letters and bold print, so the journalist wants to catch the attention of the readers on the title. Moreover, it is very explicit i.e. we don’t have to read the article to understand the subject of it. Then, we can notice there are three key words. First, the journalist presents the dead person with the words “Cyclist”. The only thing which interests is the activity of this person, the journalist doesn’t want us to care about the name or the profession. So there is a link between the activity and the death. Then, there is the word “killed”, it shows that the article deals with a murder. The readers don’t have any details of the death so the most important is who killed rather than how was she killed. Finally, we have two pieces of information in the same key word which is “her ipod”. We understand “who” is the killer: a little MP3 player named iPod nano, created by Apple which is a famous brand of computer. The advantage (and at the same time, in this case, the drawbacks) is that we can bring it everywhere. Whatever you do, you can listen to music during a lot of hours. The readers don’t know yet why an iPod is accused of a murder. Moreover, in this key word we get another information about the person who is dead: she’s a woman because the journalist uses “her”.
