Faisant partie du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 1987, l'abbaye de Westminster à Londres fut fondée par Guillaume le Confesseur. Cet édifice présente un intérêt historique très important. En effet, depuis 1066, tous les monarques britanniques (sauf Edouard V et VII) y ont été couronnés. Beaucoup d'entre eux y sont inhumés ainsi que de nombreux notables. Dans le "coin des poètes" reposent William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens et autres artistes.
Son style gothique n'apparaît qu'en 1220 lorsqu'elle fut reconstruite. Henry III fit bâtir la chapelle de la Vierge en prenant pour exemple le style des cathédrales d'Amiens et de Reims. Il fallu attendre 2 siècles avant son achèvement. Construites entre 1722 et 1745, les deux tours de chaque côté de l'entrée principale sont de Wren et Hawksmoor qui ont choisi de conserver ce style gotique.
